The
main active ingredient in the
herb feverfew is parthenolide,
a phytochemical that provides
feverfew its anti-inflammatory
properties. The herb also believed
to sooth the blood vessels in
the head, and prevent blood vessel
spasms which may contribute to
headaches and other resulting
problems. Feverfew was known
to the ancient Egyptians and Greeks
who regarded it as a valuable
remedy to alleviate headaches,
joint and stomach aches, menstrual
stress and help maintain normal
body temperature.
The
feverfew plant is rich in sesquiterpene
lactones, the principal one being
parthenolide. Other constituents
include essential oils, flavonoid
glycosides, pinene derivatives
and costic acid. Feverfew should
be taken regularly to receive
maximum protection and benefit.
Feverfew
also contains niacin and iron,
and provides nutrition to the
central nervous system.
Feverfew
should not be used during pregnancy
or if nursing.
